May 2011 - Governments Match-Funding for Phonics

The Governments ‘Importance of Teaching’ Schools White Paper has committed to provide match -funding of up to £3000 for schools with Key Stage 1 pupils. This is being given so they can buy synthetic phonics products and training for their school.

The money will be able to give schools the ability to train and coach their teachers and supply them with the necessary materials for the teaching of phonics and provide the help for the children who need additional support.

Schools will be able to use the match-funding to buy resources from an approved list of products and training that meets the departments ‘core criteria’ of effective systematic synthetic phonics programmes. This in turn will help to ensure that high quality systematic synthetic phonics products and training are available to all schools.

The match-funding will be available to schools over two years from June 2011 – March 2013. Each school will be able to purchase (from the approved lists) resources and training up to the value of £6000. The school will fund £3000 and the Department will provide the additional £3000.

The full list of approved suppliers and trainers will be available by September 2011 but will have a short list available by the end of June 2011.
